I made this alternative version of my 2006 micro short film Hi!jab and re-edited it as a silent film for a showing in a public space.
The title cards were technically aged, have lines running through the frame, and occasionally jitter as if the projector missed some perforation holes in the film stock. Made in the style of old and aged silent films. However, here the intertitles no longer have their original narrative function. I use them as a carrier for a personal commentary accompanying the contemporary images. There is a further reference to silent films through the use of slapstick. The heightened message at the end relates to those early silent films that openly pronounced moral messages (like Griffith’s 1916 epic Intolerance). In that tradition I end on a personal statement.
